
4th Int’l Confab on Islamic Civilization: Africa’s Islamic Heritage and Scholarship in Focus
Cape Town will host the 4th OIC–IRCICA–Awqaf SA International Conference,from 12-14 September bringing together top scholars, historians & cultural figures from across Africa & the Muslim world according to an official statement.
This year’s theme: “The Representation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as Depicted in African Islamic Scholarship & Literature”, marks 1,500 years since the blessed birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ a profound milestone that honours his timeless mission of mercy, environmental stewardship, and social justice.
Jointly organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), and Awqaf South Africa, the three-day event aims to:
* Explore African contributions to Sirah scholarship.
* Analyse historical, literary, theological, and cultural representations of the Prophet’s life and legacy.
* Examine how these traditions have shaped African Muslim identity, education, political thought, and intercultural engagement.
* Foster scholarly collaboration through the launch of the African Sirah Research Network and a peer-reviewed conference volume.
Key Themes:
* Historical portrayals of the Prophet in African Islamic historiography
* Cultural expressions in poetry, Ajami texts, music, and oral traditions
* Theological perspectives and comparative global studies
* Contemporary challenges in representing the Prophet in African contexts.
* Prophetic pathways to pluralism and community-building in Africa
