UDS Academic, Dr. Abdul-Basit Tampuli Abukari, Featured in J-PAL’s African Scholar Spotlight
The University for Development Studies (UDS),proudly celebrates Dr. Abdul-Basit Tampuli Abukari, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural and Food Economics, who has been profiled by The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) in its African Scholar Spotlight of 16th September 2025.

The African Scholar Spotlight is part of J-PAL’s ongoing series that highlights the contributions of African economists who are advancing development through rigorous, evidence-based research. In its latest feature, J-PAL recognized Dr. Abukari for his pioneering work in agricultural development, impact evaluation, and the digital transformation of farming systems in Northern Ghana.

Dr. Abukari’s research spans a wide range of issues, including agricultural productivity, food security, livestock management, climate change resilience, and rural livelihoods. Through several projects supported by J-PAL and its partners, he has led innovative studies on digital payment systems for cocoa farmers, livestock tracking technologies, and technology-driven veterinary service delivery. His work continues to shape evidence-based interventions that address pressing challenges in Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Abukari noted that his proximity to farming communities in Northern Ghana inspired his focus on impact evaluations that ensure interventions are not only innovative but also cost-effective and sustainable. He currently teaches Agricultural Development and Policy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at UDS, where he mentors the next generation of development economists.

The University Management has lauded this recognition, describing it as a testament to the global relevance of UDS faculty and the University’s mandate to address real development challenges, particularly in Northern Ghana.

The University extends its appreciation to J-PAL for spotlighting the work of Dr. Abukari and other African scholars, thereby creating opportunities for local researchers to influence the global development agenda.

This recognition further underscores UDS’s commitment to producing impactful research that not only informs policy but also transforms livelihoods across Ghana and Africa.
