Burkina Faso Condemns European Parliament Resolution, Summons EU Envoy

The Burkinabe government on Monday condemned a recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament, as well as comments made by French Member of the European Parliament Christophe Gomart, describing them as “false,” “contemptuous,” and disconnected from the realities facing Burkina Faso.

In response, Foreign Affairs Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré summoned the head of the European Union delegation in Ouagadougou, Philippe Bronchain, to formally convey the country’s dissatisfaction.

According to the minister, the resolution was based on inaccurate information and failed to acknowledge the sacrifices and efforts made by Burkina Faso in its fight against insecurity alongside Mali and Niger.

Mr. Traoré criticized what he described as interference in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs and rejected narratives he said carried neo-colonial undertones.

He stressed that Burkina Faso remains fully sovereign in managing its security challenges and civic space, while also pointing to the wider regional consequences of international interventions, particularly in Libya, as contributing factors to the Sahel’s instability.

For his part, EU Ambassador Philippe Bronchain acknowledged the concerns raised by the Burkinabe authorities and pledged to transmit the message to the relevant European Union institutions.

The diplomatic exchange reflects continuing tensions between Ouagadougou and some European bodies over issues related to security, governance, and national sovereignty.
